Simply Healthcare investment connects Henderson Behavioral Health with Florida State University’s first-of-its-kind pilot “Trauma Aware” certification program.

August 20, 2024

Miami, Fla. (August 20, 2024) – Simply Healthcare Plans (Simply Healthcare), a leading provider of Medicaid and Medicare solutions in Florida, today announced the next phase of its partnership with the Resilience Institute of Strength and Empowerment (RISE) at Florida State University (FSU) to promote trauma awareness among healthcare providers in Florida. To build a more resilient and trauma-educated workforce that is better equipped to help patients, Simply Healthcare is spearheading a Trauma Aware certification pilot program for healthcare service providers who directly interact with patients.

In January 2023, Simply Healthcare was the first to earn FSU’s Trauma Aware organizational certification. To earn the certification, more than 90 percent of Simply Healthcare’s 1,400 employees completed online training on the impact of trauma and the promise of resilience.

“Through training and education with our partners at FSU, we have gained a greater awareness and understanding of trauma and how we can support our members who have experienced it,” said Dana Gryniuk, Medicaid President of Simply Healthcare Plans. “Simply Healthcare is proud to extend this opportunity to our care providers through this pilot program. Together, we are building a stronger system that promotes health and wellness.”

Henderson Behavioral Health is the first care provider to participate in the pilot program, which was made possible by Simply Healthcare’s investment. To earn the organizational certification, at least 90 percent of the providers’ employees must complete the three-hour course requirement, which focuses on fundamental insights into and communication skills in trauma awareness and resilience. Also, at least 10 percent must complete the 20-hour Comprehensive Professional Certification in Trauma and Resilience.

“We are grateful to Simply Healthcare for spearheading trauma awareness across Florida.” said Dr. Steve Ronik, CEO of Henderson Behavioral Health. “Through their partnership, Henderson’s staff members are participating in FSU’s ‘Organizational Certification in Trauma and Resilience’ course. This program is equipping our staff with essential tools for resilience and helping them support patients in navigating traumatic experiences, so they can emerge with the resources they need to thrive.”

"Our partnership with Simply Healthcare enables us to leverage our evidence-based curriculum to enhance trauma awareness among healthcare professionals in Florida.” said Dr. Angi Yoder Maina, Director of the Resilience Institute at FSU. “This empowers providers to guide their patients through trauma prevention and recovery more effectively. By working together, we aim to broaden future training initiatives, making a significant impact on the well-being of all Floridians and fostering healthier communities."

This training aims to aid Floridians who may be struggling with mental or behavioral health issues by empowering healthcare providers to deliver optimal patient care while also ensuring their own well-being. Through the Trauma Aware Organizational Certification Program, healthcare service providers will:

  • Understand trauma awareness and resilience principles and practices.
  • Recognize trauma-related signs and symptoms.
  • Create a safe and supportive environment for patients.
  • Prevent burnout and improve overall the well-being of staff.
